DAY 10: BELORADO TO SAN JUAN DE ORTEGA (May 19)

Though today's weather forecast did not call for rain, we had a constant "mistiness" nearly all day. On top of the constant "mistiness" it was cold and at times windy making for a miserable day. To add insult to injury we had a pretty rough climb into the Monte de Oca. Here is what we walked:

The bridge leaving Belorado

We walked a long time with two sisters and their cousin; all from Ireland. They were delightful. We couldn't keep up with them. Their destination for today was six kilometers beyond where we were going and they had to get moving.

San Juan de Ortega is a very small hamlet with less than 15 inhabitants. It is the home of an interesting little church with some unique:

One of its many treasures is a capital that tells the story of the Nativity cycle:

Left to Right: The Annunciation; The Visitation between Mary and Elizabeth; The Visit of the Angel to Joseph (who comforts him)

The Nativity with Mary in bed and the midwife comforting her; the three objects above her head are thought to represent the visit of the three Magi.

In the middle shadowed area you see a second woman; perhaps a second midwife identified as Salomé who doubted the perpetual virginity of Mary; finally the appearance of the Angel to the shepherds to announce the birth of the Savior.
